How Pregnancy Tests Work

Pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your blood or urine, depending on the type of test. This hormone is produced rapidly in the body after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus following conception.

When hCG is detected, it will show as a positive result on your pregnancy test. Because of this, taking a pregnancy test at the right time is important. Taking a test too early can cause a false negative.

When To Take a Pregnancy Test

You should take a pregnancy test one day after your missed period, as this is when hCG levels should be detectable. If you have an irregular cycle, then you can test four weeks since you last had sex.

Testing with the first morning urine will give a more accurate result as the level of hCG will be more concentrated. If your pregnancy test result is negative, but your period still hasn’t arrived, repeat testing is recommended as hCG levels can take longer to rise for some women.

What Affects The Accuracy of a Pregnancy Test

Pregnancy tests have 99% accuracy; however, some factors can cause inaccurate results, such as:

  • Taking the test too early
  • Diluted urine
  • Expired test kits
  • Not following test instructions correctly

False negatives are more common than false positives. False positives are rare but can be caused by certain medications containing hCG, such as fertility medication. Problems with the ovaries and menopause may also lead to a false positive result.

What To Do After Your Test Results

If you have discovered you are unexpectedly pregnant, we understand you might be feeling confused or uncertain about what to do next.

While a pregnancy test does confirm hCG has been detected, it doesn’t give us the important details such as how far along you are, the location of the pregnancy, and the viability (if there is a heartbeat). This information can be provided by getting a limited ultrasound at our center.
